An Initial Public Offering (IPO) is when a private company offers its shares to the public for the first time by listing on a stock exchange (BSE/NSE). This allows the company to raise capital from public investors and gives early investors and founders an opportunity to realize gains on their investments.
Grey Market Premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated indicator that represents the price at which IPO shares are being traded in the grey market before the official listing. A positive GMP suggests demand, while a negative GMP indicates weak sentiment. However, GMP is highly volatile and should not be the sole basis for investment decisions.
Mainboard IPOs are from larger companies with higher issue sizes (typically ₹10 Cr+), stricter SEBI regulations, and are listed on the main BSE/NSE platform. SME IPOs are from smaller companies listed on BSE SME or NSE Emerge platforms, with lower entry barriers and typically smaller issue sizes. SME IPOs carry higher risk due to lower liquidity and less regulatory scrutiny.
You can apply for an IPO through your Demat account via ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount) using your bank's net banking, or through UPI-based applications via trading apps like Zerodha, Groww, or Angel One. The application amount is blocked in your bank account until allotment is finalized.
IPO Allotment is the process where the registrar allocates shares to applicants after the IPO subscription period closes. If the IPO is oversubscribed, shares are allotted on a lottery basis for retail investors. You can check your allotment status on the registrar's website using your PAN number or application number.
DRHP (Draft Red Herring Prospectus) is the preliminary document filed with SEBI before an IPO, containing company details, financials, risk factors, and the purpose of the offering. RHP (Red Herring Prospectus) is the final version filed after SEBI approval, which includes the final price band and other updated details. Both are essential reading for any IPO investor.
